Pride Week - Querencia Screening

Presented by Newcastle Libraries, Newcastle University, Queer Screen & City Of Newcastle

This year we’re continuing Newcastle Universities Pride Week celebrations of  LGBTIQA+ communities through queer storytelling on screen with a hit direct from Queer Screen -  Querencia. Join us for Querencia at the Civic Playhouse in collaboration with Newcastle Libraries.

Querencia is a coming of age 2SLGBTQ+ (two spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer) story on the budding romance between two young Indigenous (Canadian) women Abe and Daka,  who are grappling with the intricacies of identity.

After Daka (Kaitlyn Yott), a traditional Indigenous woman, leaves her high-school boyfriend of 8 years and family to pursue her dreams of dancing in Toronto, she is faced with the harsh realities of unfulfilled expectations in a city that will eat her alive.

"This story was sparked by the desire for Indigiqueer representation on screen. Growing up, I had no one who I could look to on-screen that I felt wholly connected to. I hope that this show gives our Indigiqueer young adults something to turn to, to connect with, and to feel like they belong," said Galloway.
