Being Sellers

At the Playhouse | 25-28 Nov
103 days from now
Caulfield is never judgmental…and takes as much care to impart Sellers’ moral failings as his singularly fecund imagination. Most of all, he shows us the very human being behind the venerated clown. Madeleine North, Time Out.
“The piece is skillfully written…It takes us from theatre dressing rooms in Sellers’ childhood, through the larky RAF and ENSA (Entertainment National Service Association) years, to raging, disappointing marriages (“like cars – beautiful at first, then after a while you hear a rattling”). Libby Purves, The Times, London.
Engrossing and entertaining...a considerable achievement. Ken Longworth, Newcastle Herald.

Presented by Stray Dogs Theatre Co.

On the 40th anniversary of the untimely death of the comic genius Peter Sellers, Stray Dogs Theatre Co. reprises its greatest hit, Carl Caulfield’s one-man tour de force Being Sellers.

Sellers was renowned for his ability to completely transform into his film roles, from Inspector Clouseau to Chance the Gardener. But his talent came at a great personal cost.

Caulfield's one-man play exploits the theatricality of Sellers' chameleon art, to unmask the man through a gallery of his most memorable characters, including favourite voices from The Goons.
Being Sellers premiered at The Playhouse in 1998, before going on to seasons in Geelong and at the Edinburgh Fringe, where it was spotted for a London transfer.  It was then produced in London in 2010, in a production starring British actor David Boyle, which transferred to New York at the 59E59 Theater as part of Brits Off Broadway.

Running time 70mins (no interval)
